He has over the past thirty years dedicated some of his finest work to portraying the many aspects of the game of golf, from its rich traditions to its heroes and most memorable competitions. Spitzmiller is perhaps best recognized for his many contributions to Golf Magazine and Sports Illustrated. Caption, in full: "Three times since his 1970 victory at St. Andrews Jack Nicklaus had finished second in Britain. In '77, Nicklaus suffered a bruising loss to Tom Watson at Turnberry. He hadn't won a major championship in three years when, in 1978, the British Open returned to the Old Course. The Golden Bear was hungry - he also was one down to Simon Owen on the 16th hole of the final round and faced a delicate downwind wedge shot. He put the ball 10 feet from the cup and sank the putt; Owen took bogey. Two good pars won the tournament, and Jack Nicklaus, tears in his eyes, was hailed by the throng as the champion returned."
