Caption, in full: Arnold Palmer came to Oakmont as The Masters champion at the peak of his game, 32 years old. Jack Nicklaus was a 22-year-old rookie, an upstart challenging the king. The pro game would never be the same after their playoff for the Open title in 1962. Nicklaus outdrove and outputted Palmer to go four up after six holes. Palmer characteristically charged back with three birdies but could get no closer, and Nicklaus pulled away to win by three for his first pro victory. The great rivalry of the next half dozen years was on.
