Walter Spitzmiller Limited Edition Prints Walter Spitzmiller is one of the world's foremost sporting artists. He has over the past thirty years dedicated some of his finest work to portraying the many aspects of the game of golf, from its rich traditions to its heroes and most memorable competitions. Spitzmiller is perhaps best recognized for his many contributions to Golf Magazine and Sports Illustrated. He was the Chief Contributing Artist to Senior Golfer Magazine and special contributor to Outdoor Life for Jim Fergus' column "The Sporting Road”. Headed at upper margin: “The US Open Oakmont” Caption at lower margin headed: “Star Wars l” When Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer played off for the1962 U.S. Open, the greatest rivalry of modern times began. Caption, in full: Arnold Palmer came to Oakmont as The Masters champion at the peak of his game, 32 years old. Jack Nicklaus was a 22-year-old rookie, an upstart challenging the king. The pro game would never be the same after their playoff for the Open title in 1962. Nicklaus outdrove and outputted Palmer to go four up after six holes. Palmer characteristically charged back with three birdies but could get no closer, and Nicklaus pulled away to win by three for his first pro victory. The great rivalry of the next half dozen years was on.
